How safe are EVs, exactly?

The safety outcomes of recent EV safety tests, according to IIHS President David Harkey, are encouraging. When Americans opt to switch, they don't have to give up their safety because these vehicles are safer for the environment.
Damage rates are lower -
The IIHS emphasizes that when operating an EV, the rate of injury claims for passenger and pedestrian crashes is 40% lower than when operating a fuel-powered vehicle. They relate this improvement in safety to the weight of EVs. Damage is less likely to occur following an accident since heavier vehicles are exposed to lower pressures when colliding with lighter vehicles.
Less explosions -
While explosive, lithium-ion batteries (the technology that powers EVs) are less hazardous than gasoline. They point out that EVs and other devices using lithium-ion batteries, such as phones, computers, and ordinary batteries, represent essentially the same level of combustion risk.
